Black Jewels PB Suggestions
About ethnicity: this is a fantasy series without the usual fantasy geographical division of "white noble Europeans, savage Africans, and mysterious Asians" (THIS IS A GOOD THING, JUST SAYIN' /STARES AT TAMORA PIERCE AND GEORGE R R MARTIN), so none of the characters' races have a clear parallel to ours. I'm of the unpopular opinion that when Anne Bishop describes a race as being brown-skinned, she literally means they're brown -- not white people with tans. I tried to cast diversely wherever possible; many characters' skintones are not directly mentioned, and if there's no implication that they're supposed to be pale, my suggestions lean strongly towards people of colour. I will take suggestions, bearing in mind my feelings about PoC in this series! JAENELLE ANGELLINE Jaenelle hails from Chaillot, a region implied to be populated mostly by fair-skinned people. She has pale skin, golden blonde hair and striking, unnerving blue eyes. As a child and teen she has an odd, peculiar face that she only begins to grow into in early adulthood. Her beauty is controversial -- she's described as the most beautiful thing some characters have ever seen, while others believe her to be either quite plain or outright ugly. As a child her hair was often done up in elaborate sausage-curls and her clothes were of good quality; as a teen she preferred sloppy, casual men's wear; as an adult she strikes a balance between her casual, frumpy everyday clothes and more elaborate fantasy dresses. She usually has very long, straight hair that is cut short for a period of time in her adulthood. Child: Jenna Boyd, Chloe Moretz, Wiktoria Gąsiewska Teen: Anna Marie Muhe, Skye Stracke Adult: Emilie Wold, Jessica Stam, Sasha Pivovarova, Lara Stone DAEMON Daemon is a man in his prime (mid-to-late 20's) with black hair, brown skin, and golden eyes. He is described as being breathtakingly, almost inhumanly beautiful, slightly feline in appearance. He almost always (to his family's eventual exasperation) dresses in a tailored black suit with a white silk shirt and dress shoes, and wears his nails long and black-tinted. SAETAN Daemon's and Lucivar's father, he is Dhemlan by birth and thus identical in colouring to Daemon. His resemblance to Daemon is so exact that many characters have mistaken them for each other until closer examination. He's a man past his prime (likely in his 40's to 50's) with silvering hair at the temples and a tendency to wear a hilarious Dracula-like cape. LUCIVAR Saetan's son and Daemon's half-brother. Lucivar is fairly attractive, Eyrien (meaning he has black bat-like wings attached to his back), and possesses the usual Eyrien colouring of brown skin, black hair, and gold eyes. In the later books he is said to allow his hair to grow out despite Eyrien tradition calling for close-cropped hair. He is roughly the same age as Daemon. SURREAL Half-Hayllian, half-Dea al Mon. Surreal is described as having gold-brown skin and straight black hair like a Hayllian, but oversized gold-green eyes and pointed ears with a slight build marking her as half-Dea al Mon. Ariel Meredith, Amerie, Noemie Lenoir, Jourdan Dunn EBON RIH Rihlanders are mentioned as being a mostly fair-skinned people. ROXIE DEA AL MON The Dea Al Mon are described as being universally silver-haired with green or blue oversized eyes, pointed ears, and thin, slight builds. CHAOSTI "They both had the slender, sinewy build that was as inherent to their race as the delicately pointed ears. Both wore their silver hair long and unbound. Both had the large, forest-blue eyes, although the girl's had a touch more gray." DHARO AARON A "black-haired, grey-eyed youth who strongly reminded Saetan of the young wolves now living in the north woods." SABRINA A hazel-eyed brunette. DHEMLAN/HAYLLIANS Dhemlans and Hayllians are described as having various shades of brown skin (described as gold, brown, light brown, dark brown, etc), with universally straight black hair and golden eyes. Dhemlans are said to be slightly lighter-skinned than Hayllians. DOROTHEA Typical colouring of the Hayllian people. Dorothea is likely in her 30's to 40's. By Queen of the Darkness, she has aged to an old woman with white hair. HEKATAH Typical colouring of the Hayllian people. Hekatah is a woman contemporary in age to Saetan, so just past her prime, likely in her 40's to 50's. By Queen of the Darkness, her body has been reduced to a desiccated, grotesque corpse. MEPHIS Saetan's eldest son. TERSA Typical brown-skinned, golden-eyed, black-haired colouring of the Hayllian people. Tersa's long hair is usually tangled and looks as if "no comb but her fingers have ever gone through it". She's very thin and often oddly or inadequately dressed, and tends to have a look of confusion or unsettling intensity about her. EYRIENS Eyriens are identical to Hayllians and Dhemlans, with the same brown skin, gold eyes, and straight black hair, except that Eyriens have large black bat-like wings on their backs. Eyrien males tend to wear their hair close-cropped. ANDULVAR LUTHVIAN Luthvian is described as being youthful (likely appearing to be in her mid to late 20's) with very long hair she tends to wear in a braid down her back with a white streak in it. PROTHVAR GLACIA Glacia is a country to the extreme north of Kaeleer and is apparently composed mostly of pale-skinned people with light hair and eyes. KARLA "Tall and slim, she wore severely tailored, dark blue trousers, a loose jacket, and heeled boots. Her white-blond hair rose in spiky peaks above her head like sculptured ice. Darkened eyebrows and lashes framed ice-blue eyes." Teen: Lily Loveless Adult: Brea Grant, Kate Ashfield, Kate Miller-Heidke MORTON Morton is Karla's cousin and is described as being similar in colouring to her. Teen: Mitch Hewer, Jack Gleeson NHARKOVA KALUSH "The last of the group--a petite witch with a lusciously rounded figure, soft brown eyes, and dark brown hair--hugged Jaenelle, shyly approached him, and introduced herself as Kalush from Nharkova. There was a sweetness about her that made Saetan want to cuddle her. ... She had a husky voice that would do wonderfully bad things to young men's libidos. He pitied her father." Teen: Samantha Harris, Vanessa Hudgens Adult: Asin Thottumkal, Amara Karan, Sibel Kekilli, Amrita Acharia SCELT KHARDEEN "The youth who'd come in with the fire witch was tall, good-looking, and a couple years older. He had curly brown hair and blue eyes. ... There were a lot of ways he could describe those blue eyes. They all meant trouble." MORGHANN "If Karla was ice, this one was fire, with her dark red hair flowing down her back, her green eyes flashing, and a swirling gown that looked like an autumn woods in motion." Teen: Helena Magone, Sophie Turner, Susan Coffey Adult: MISC KATRINE "The small, pixie-faced darling with the dusky hair and iridescent wings." From Philan, one of the Paw Islands. GREZANDE Grezande is Tigrelan, described as being a race of tawny-skinned, dark-stripped humanoid/feline hybrids with sheathed claws in their hands.
